In 1996 he graduated from the Janáček Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, in dramatic acting.
Since 2001 he has been employed at the Brno Municipal Theatre (Městské divadlo Brno).
He is the holder of Thálie award 2007, which he got for his extraordinary acting performance in the musical The Witches of Eastwick where he played the role of Darryl van Horne.
In 2014 he was nominated for the main role in two-part film The Last Cyclist by Jiří Svoboda at the international television festival Golden Nymph Awards in Monte Carlo, which is held annually under the auspices of Duke Albert II. Petr Štěpán was nominated in the category Best Male Actor.
